Local Dog Walks
South Bay car park to the Kowhai river mouth:
Park at the first car park on the right, overlooking the beach as you enter South Bay and walk along the limestone track to the pine trees. This is a simple, flat walk with no shade so remember to bring a cap on the sunny days! Keep following the track all the way through the forest. (Alternatively, you can also start from here by just parking the car at the start of the forest; the track can be easily seen). This is very popular for dog walks as it provides a shady walk on a hot day and also backs onto the beach. We like to take Toby for a walk along the forest to the Kowhai river mouth where he takes a swim and then back to the car. (1 hour 45 return)
Town beach walking track:
This one gets the thumbs up from Toby!
The walking track runs from the town centre right to the end of Beach Road, right alongside the beach. It’s an easy stroll on a good path. There are multiple opportunities to join up with the track from the main road at Whale Watch, New World and even an access point just a 3 minute walk from our holiday park! This is definitely one to do early in the morning as you can watch the most incredible sunrises from the walking track and sometimes even spot a dolphin or two if you’re lucky!
Fyffe Palmer Walk:
Feeling like a little bit more of an adventure? This is a very underrated walk and offers great views looking back on the peninsula. The start of the walk is steep and ascends through farmland and over a few farm fence stiles then takes you up through the magnificent regenerating forest of Fyffe-Palmer Scenic Reserve. Keep climbing till you come to the walk bridge then it’s all downhill from there. The native bird life is abundant and there is even a small but picturesque waterfall at the halfway point. Now, the secret to this walk is which direction you take it! You can take this loop clockwise (easier) or anti clockwise (harder) which both take you around 1hr 15 mins. We wish we knew this before we went!
Pet friendly Cafes & Restaurants:
Most of Kaikoura eateries have beautiful outdoor areas and the general rule of thumb is that if there's an outside eating area - dogs are often welcome. We know for sure that The Strawberry Tree Bar & Restaurant, The Pier Hotel & Restaurant, Simes, Beach House Cafe, Dolphin Encounter Cafe and The Groper Garage are all pet friendly. They often have a bowl outside so your pup can have a cold drink too. Just remember to always have them on a lead.
Nearest Vet Clinic:
Our nearest vet clinic, VetCARE Kaikoura, is located approx 3km from the holiday park at 75 Athelney Road and is open Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 12pm. They also have an out of hour’s clinic for emergencies only.
